An Officer Killed at Aransas.
--- Some weeks since we noticed the death of an officer of the army at
Aransas by falling from the yard-arm of the steam schooner Augusta. We
were unable to learn his name at the time, and upon each subsequent
arrival from Aransas our repeated inquiries were baffled. But a letter
received at Boston confirms the reported death. The sufferer was Lieut.
Merrick, of Ohio, a late graduate of West Point. It seems that his skull
was broken by the falling of the fore-topmast of the vessel, employed as a
lighter over the bar, which struck him on the head and caused his death in
three hours.
