We are sorry to see that some of the
soldiers over at Corpus Christi do not fancy the climate. They had
anticipated something of the tropical character of Cuba, and are
disappointed. An officer writing to the N. Y. Evening Gazette gives the
following anecdote:
A solder of the 4th Infantry
was asked how he liked the country; he replied in his broken English and
peculiar accent – which gives point to the story — “I ave serve en
Russie, en Prusse, and with the grand Napoleon – and I ave serve en la
Mexique – but d__n Tex.”
