August 24, 1845 - Article 2
The U. S. Flying Artillery at Baltimore,
under Col. Ringgold, were expected to sail for Texas on the 18th
instant. They commenced putting their guns, &c., on board the Herman some
days previously.
The Union has seen a letter from Texas, West
of the Nueces, dated July 26th, upon which the editor places
the greatest reliance. — It states that the Mexicans really were
concentrating provisions and munitions of war at Matamoros as fast as
possible, and also troops at Monterey. The writers of this letter, says
the Union, are engaged in the Mexican trade, and communicate at least
weekly with Matamoros; and their experience with the frontier Mexicans is
such, that they can hardly be deceived. Still we prefer to rely upon the
report which we gave yesterday, nearly a month later, and coming directly
from an officer under Gen. Taylor.
